A little while back, my buddy, Russell Pefinis, asked me, via text message:
Hey dude! How is Florida treating you? Hope to be down there in Tampa soon once school is out. So I have got into vinyl collecting, of course as one would. Looking to add some jazz and just good albums to put on when people are over chillin for back ground noise. I know you are the person to go to for good music recommendations. I remember your jazz collection being... I just don’t have access to all that old iTunes music I got from you anymore and can’t remember who you had. Any recommendations?
I promptly replied:
Thelonious Monk
Charles Mingus - specifically “Mingus Ah Um”
Father Tom Vaughn
Oscar Peterson - all versions
More to come. Great question.
Florida is amazing. We love where we live and the new people.
More to come.
No notes or advice, just a few names.
Jazz needs room to breathe.
I promised more, but neglected to follow up.
A few weeks later, I received another text from Russell (unedited here, to preserve the intensity of its delivery):
So took it in for the last several weeks. Gave each their own dedicated time and then threw them all together. So what I like about Thelonious Monk is it gives me a more chill type jazz like Miles Davis. Some parts are a little bit faster but for the most part it seems almost slower than the others. But I love it. I like Charles Mingus because he is very improvisational. He has very early on Grateful Dead vibes when the band was doing the acid trips and listening to a lot of jazz. It’s chaotic sounding but somewhere the band brings its all together. It’s almost as if there is someone keeping them all in the room together but free to do their own thing in the room if that makes any sense. I really like Oscar Peterson and Father Tom Vaughn. Those two are great. I love that they do this almost classical type jazz and then go into this fast beat with real heavy bass and fast drummer style. I probably have listened to them the most.
I learn more from listening to my friends enjoy music than I ever learned in any classroom... ever... (Sorry, not sorry: Emory)
All I could say was:
I love this review. Can I quote you on my website?
Russell Pefinis, ever the wisest, albeit most unsuspecting, and loyal friends a freak like me could wish for... replied:
Yes, of course.
So long as there are people like Russell on this earth, there will be insane artists creating magical experiences for fans.
Also, so long as there are humans like Russell, there will be hope for humankind.
